Day 2 : Deeply Rooted: Commemorating the Civil Rights Movement

Clayborne Carson and Roger Mudd were present 50 years ago at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Carson was an eager college student; Mudd was a burgeoning reporter. Both men are profiled in the PBS documentary called The March. The March airs tonight on PBS.

American University Professor Keith Leonard explains all about the oral tradition in African American letters, poetry, and cultural rhetoric. Dr. Leonard keeps his “ear to the streets” when it comes to contemporary African American rhetoric, and he tells us why language is a critical piece of African American identity and American civil rights.
