What a long, strange trip it’s been for Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz. And now thanks to the new documentary from director Doug Pray titled Surfwise, we can get a taste of the journey Paskowitz took – and took his whole family on. “Doc” was a Stanford-trained doctor in the 1950s but left it behind to pursue women, a life of simple, healthy living and above all surfing. Through the 1960s, 70s and 80s, Paskowitz led his wife Juliette and their NINE children across the country, from beach town to beach town – dominating surfing contests, homeschooling the kids and living hand-to-mouth. The Paskowitz family did all this while packed into a 24-foot camper. The documentary features interviews with “Doc,” Juliette and the now grown kids, who have complex and differing views of their time spent on the road. The 87-year-old Paskowitz still surfs, is as feisty as ever and, as you’ll hear in the interview, was a very reluctant subject of this documentary. No doubts Surfwise is my favorite sports documentary. But this your story brings me more than just sports: the love of a parent for his children, teaching them all you knew, on my opinion most of the things you thought them are right till today.
